The 7 Exterior Paint Colors Lowcountry Homeowners Ask Us For Most
Hi, I'm Humberto Machin, founder of Fresh Start Paint Pros. I started this company in 2022 because I wanted painting done right: no shortcuts, no guesswork. That's what I try to bring to every post here: real advice from real jobs. I hope these posts help you make a confident decision for your home.
Ask ten Lowcountry homeowners what they want on the outside of the house and most of them land in the same narrow band: a warm off-white, a greige, a soft coastal blue-gray, a deep navy, or a creamy almond with something blue overhead.
Every color below is off a real Fresh Start job, with the brand and the name, not a swatch wall. I’ve been picking exterior colors in this climate long enough to know which ones still look right in year five.
Popular exterior house paint colors on Lowcountry homes
These are our seven most-requested, in the order we get asked for them.
1. Sherwin-Williams Alabaster with Charleston green shutters
Downtown Charleston, historic double-porch single house. Alabaster is a soft, warm white that doesn’t go gray under a cloudy sky or glare under a July sun.

Paired with Charleston green shutters, which is the almost-black green that reads black until you stand right at it, this is as close to a default downtown palette as exists. It’s also the one that gets through review with the least friction. If it were our own house on a historic street, this is what we’d paint it.
2. Sherwin-Williams Perfect Greige
Summerville new build, board-and-batten and shake, in one of the Nexton-style neighborhoods. Greige is what people ask for when they say “beige but not beige.”
Perfect Greige has enough warmth to sit well against a dark roof and enough gray to look current. It’s also an easy HOA approval in almost every Summerville and Cane Bay community, which matters more than people expect.
3. Benjamin Moore Boothbay Gray
Soft blue-gray is the coastal color, and Boothbay Gray is the one we keep coming back to because it holds its color. Pale blues with a lot of pigment in them are the first thing our sun takes apart.
This one sits between blue and gray far enough that even after a few seasons of salt and glare it still reads the way it did on day one.

4. Benjamin Moore Hale Navy
Mount Pleasant cottage with cream trim. Navy is the boldest color most homeowners will commit to, and it’s worth it on a small house where the whole elevation reads as one gesture.
Fair warning, dark colors work harder here. They absorb heat, they show chalking sooner, and they need a premium exterior product to stay deep instead of drifting purple. Done right, nothing else has this much presence.

5. Sherwin-Williams Creamy with a haint blue porch ceiling
Summerville, board-and-batten with a deep front porch. Creamy is a soft almond that photographs warm and looks even better in person on a shaded porch. The ceiling is the part people notice. Haint blue comes out of Gullah Geechee tradition, where a sky-and-water blue overhead was believed to keep restless spirits from crossing into the house, and the original pigment came from Lowcountry indigo. We paint a lot of them, usually in the Palladian Blue range, and we’d never talk a client out of one.
6. Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter
The cooler cousin to Perfect Greige, and the pick when a house has a lot of stone or a cool-toned roof. Slightly grayer, slightly quieter.
7. Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore on doors and shutters
Not a body color. It’s the soft black we use on front doors, shutters, and garage doors to sharpen up a light body color. It’s the cheapest high-impact change on this list.
The best exterior paint colors for coastal homes and what actually holds up
Salt air, humidity, and coastal UV do three different things to paint, and color choice changes how fast you see them.
Deep reds and saturated blues fade first, because those pigments break down fastest in direct sun.
Dark colors of any kind show chalking sooner on south and west elevations. Whites and warm neutrals hold their appearance the longest, which is a real reason so much of the Lowcountry is painted light, not just a stylistic one.
None of that means you can’t paint a navy house. It means the product and the prep have to match the ambition. We spec premium exterior acrylics on every dark body color, because the resin quality is what keeps the film flexible through our humidity swings and the pigment stable under the sun.
That’s also why we can put a 5-year warranty behind exterior work. Timing matters too, and our guide on the best time to paint an exterior around here covers the humidity side of it.
Getting your color past the HOA or the historic board
Two different processes, and homeowners mix them up constantly.
HOA neighborhoods. Summerville, Cane Bay, Nexton and most Mount Pleasant subdivisions keep an approved palette, and you submit your choice before anyone paints. The usual snag is trim: the body gets approved and the trim or door doesn’t. Submit the whole scheme at once, body, trim, shutters and door, and have the brand and color name on the form.
Charleston’s historic districts. This is the Board of Architectural Review and it’s a different beast. There is a time frame involved in the review process and colors should be suitable for the period for which the structure is historic.
There is a lot of this done through our historic restoration projects, and the simple truth is to begin this discussion early and rather than a Pinterest board, bring documentation along.
In either case, taste prior to submission. Two coats on a two foot board, taken around the house, placed in the morning sunshine and the evening dusk. The chip is not the one that’s lying, the board is.

The best way to get to know exterior paint colors Charleston homeowners really live with is to see them in your own home, in your own light, next to your own roof. Frequently asked questions
What are the outermost paint shades that are perfect for contemporary residences?
Low contrast schemes: a warm, greige/soft white body with black or near black trim and a natural wood door. Most of what is meant by modern here is represented by Perfect Greige, Alabaster, and Iron Ore on the accents.
What is the popular color for the outside of houses?
Warm whites and greiges are still ubiquitous, navy is holding steady and we are seeing more subdued greens than a few years ago.
What are the best paint colors for curb appeal?
I’ve found that a light, warm body color that contrasts with dark door trim and white body trim boosts curb appeal more than almost any bold body color. The contrast that those three elements provide is what is important and noticed from the street.
Where can I buy sample exterior paint colors?
Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore in Charleston and Summerville have everything I described above in sample pots. I recommend buying the sample paint pots instead of sample paint chips and painting it on boards you can move around the house. We also provide larger samples to each color consultation.
Do you have exterior paint color suggestions that enhance curb appeal?
If I had to give one recommendation: Alabaster body, white trim, and Iron Ore door and shutters. It works on almost every type of house, historic or modern, in Summerville. It’s never looked dated.
What type of paint colors look best for wood siding?
Lighter colors for a practical reason. Wood expands and contracts based on humidity levels, and dark colors absorb more heat causing stress to the paint film and siding joints. Controlled white’s, greiges, and soft blue-grays put the least strain on wood siding, and all of them require a primer on raw wood and previously stained wood.
